Let’s bring the book about the 1:1 Workshop’s architectural interventions to the world
For ten years, the travelling 1:1 Workshop transformed public spaces across Slovak regions. Now we want to share this story globally through an English edition of Out There.
About the book
Out There captures a decade of summer architectural workshops organized by WOVEN. Each year, teams designed and built small-scale interventions directly on site—where public space needed a spark, new life, or a community anchor. The book documents these interventions and reflects on public space, the people who inhabit it, and the objects that reshape it.
It is part guidebook, part essay, part storytelling—but above all, a study of what makes architecture in the regions truly alive. After publishing the Slovak edition last year, we are ready to bring it to an international readership.
Why an English translation?
The experience of the 1:1 Workshop has relevance beyond Slovakia. It shows how architecture and design can revive overlooked places and offers practical approaches for working with public space differently. The workshop itself was international, with participants and lecturers from abroad—making an English edition a natural next step. We believe the book belongs in the global conversation on architecture, participation, and sustainability.
How we will use your support
Your contributions will fund the translation, graphic design, and printing of the English edition, as well as part of the distribution and promotion to reach a wider audience. Every contribution helps carry a powerful Slovak story into an international context.
Who is behind the project?
The book builds on the work of WOVEN, dozens of workshop participants, international lecturers, and the local communities that hosted the workshop—such as Fabrika umenia in Partizánske, Ars Preuge in Prievidza, Young Folks in Lučenec, or the Architecture Center in Piešťany. The publication includes contributions from respected experts including Monika Mitášová, SPOLKA, Lívia Gažová, Ivana Rumanová, and Klaudia Dočekalová.
WOVEN is a collective of four architects creating small-scale spatial solutions—from pavilions and public-space interventions to exhibition systems and new forms of urban furniture. Their work activates overlooked places and encourages people to stay “out there” a little longer.
Media & recognition
The 1:1 Workshop has been featured in numerous architectural and cultural media, including Archinfo, ARCHITECT+, EARCH, ArchDaily and Denník N. Its projects have been nominated for the CE ZA AR Award, and Rampolyna received the international BIG SEE Architecture Award. This recognition shows the workshop’s real impact—and why it’s worth bringing its story to a global audience.
