We have been organising the One World festival for 25 years. We are a non-profit organization People in Peril and One World International Documentary Film Festival has been our flagship event for 25 years. The idea of bringing our work – whether in the field of humanitarian aid or the fight for human rights – closer to the people of Slovakia sparked the creation of the festival. In doing so, we contribute to building a resilient, inclusive society that is ready to meet the challenges of an ever-changing and interconnected world. Now is the moment when One World needs civil society to come together in support of these values.
The Audiovisual Fund has withdrawn its support for One World.
After 25 years of continuous existence, One World, the largest and oldest documentary film festival in Slovakia, is in danger. Your support is now crucial. Every contribution, big or small, can make the difference in the continuation of One World.
Support for the festival is always preceded by an expert evaluation by the independent Audiovisual Fund Committee, which assesses projects based on their quality and social contribution. Even though we once again received excellent evaluations from the expert committee, the Audiovisual Fund's board, made up of nominees of the Minister of Culture, rejected its support.
"Based on previous years, we were counting on a support of 30,000 euros. We still believe that the festival will be possible, we just need to find a replacement for this support. We are not letting go of our goal to create a high-quality event, with top films from all over the world and accessible to all, regardless of race, gender, age, health or social status, " explains Eva Križková, director of the One World Festival, explaining the situation.
To complete the picture, we would like to add that our festival is the only one that fulfils the key priorities of the Audiovisual Fund and the Culture and Creative Industries 2030 Strategy in the field of accessibility of audiovisual content for disadvantaged groups of the population.
Help us preserve the festival in its quality, inclusiveness and openness to all. Culture must not be held hostage by political interests.
One World – Festival that changes perspectives and inspires change.
One World is the largest and oldest documentary film festival in Slovakia with 25 years of tradition. It brings powerful stories that open eyes, challenge stereotypes and give voice to those who are often overlooked. It is not just a film festival – it is a platform for discussion, education and committed social change.
What makes One World special?
- A selection of world-class documentaries – The festival brings the best documentaries from around the world that reflect on current social, environmental and human rights issues. The films are selected by a team of top experts from different continents, ensuring a true diversity and complexity of perspectives.
- Opens important discussions – Each film is accompanied by panel discussions where experts and practitioners, activists and viewers work together to find solutions to pressing issues.
- Brings global issues to a broad audience – Enables viewers and viewers to understand the world through authentic stories of people facing injustice, climate change, rights violations or social conflict.
- Accessibility for everyone – The festival has a long-standing commitment to inclusion. Screenings and discussions are accessible to people with disabilities, youth, seniors or marginalized communities.
- In cinemas and online – One World offers a unique live experience in cinemas, while allowing audiences to watch films from the comfort of their home via an online platform. In this way, it is accessible to audiences across the country, including people who would not otherwise be able to attend.
- Educates and shapes the younger generation – The Schools Programme motivates students to think critically about the world around them and not be afraid to take action.
Contribute to making the One World Festival happen.
The €30,000 support from the Audiovisual Fund will not come this year. We need your help now to bring the festival to all again this fall.
The funds raised will be used for the necessary running of the festival, such as cinema rentals, film licenses, subtitle translations, sign language interpretation, festival communication or making screenings accessible to disadvantaged groups. Part of the donations will help cover the costs of the organising team who work for months to ensure that the festival runs safely, inclusively and provides a quality experience.
Thank you for every single donation that brings us closer to making the festival happen. We hope that this year we will be able to meet again in the cinema halls and enjoy inspiring films and discussions together 💗.
