Náš orchester dostal pozvanie na dva festivaly do Poľska. Vždy nás to poteší (pri Poľsku ešte o trochu viac :-)) a vtedy sa to začne… Treba dať dokopy termíny 20 vyťažených kolegov, naplánovať trasu a, samozrejme, spraviť vyrovnaný rozpočet.
Keďže nás je v orchestri naozaj veľa – čomu napovedá už pomenovanie orchester – tak to nie je úplne ľahké…
Tu sa dostávame k meritu problému. Ak máme byť konkurencieschopní v zahraničí, nemôžeme požadovať dvojnásobný honorár, aj keď nás je oproti iným zoskupeniam dvakrát viac. Rozpočtári festivalov si totiž nastavili matematiku a tá je jasná: band/honorár. A či je band veľký alebo menší, už sa začína boj medzi dramaturgom a financmajstrom.
Tu nám veľmi často pomáhajú inštitúcie, ktoré sú na to zriadené. Pri podpore na dopravné náklady a poprípade aj ubytovanie už spomínaná matematika vychádza. Lenže tentoraz sme sa dostali do úzkych. Opäť v skratke k harmonogramu:
- V januári sme dostali pozvanie.
- Vo februári sme spravili projekt a podali žiadosť.
- V apríli sme mali dostať výsledky a v prípade úspechu potvrdiť alebo v prípade neúspechu odrieknuť účasť na festivale.
Výsledok však prišiel až 11. 6. s týmto nemilým verdiktom: „Odborná komisia odporúča projekt nepodporiť vzhľadom na nízku alokovanú sumu pridelenú pre daný podprogram.“
Lenže my sme to v apríli riskli. Hop alebo trop! Takže, ideme na dva festivaly a spravíme aj koncert so vstupom zadarmo pre Varšavčanov. S tým nám pomôže opäť Slovenský inštitút vo Varšave, a vy nám môžete pomôcť s nákladmi na dopravu a ubytovanie. ĎAKUJEME!!!

Our orchestra has been invited to perform at two festivals in Poland. It’s always a pleasure to receive such invitations (and when it’s Poland, we’re even happier! :-)), and that’s when the real work begins… We have to coordinate the schedules of 20 very busy colleagues, plan the travel route, and, of course, put together a balanced budget.
Since there are quite a lot of us in the orchestra—as the word orchestra itself suggests—that’s not exactly an easy task…
And this is where we come to the heart of the matter. If we want to remain competitive internationally, we simply can’t ask for twice the fee just because our ensemble is twice the size of others. Festival budgets are based on a simple calculation: band versus fee. Whether the band is large or small, that’s where the artistic director’s ambitions start colliding with the finance manager’s budget.
This is where institutions specifically created to support projects like ours often make all the difference. When travel costs—and sometimes accommodation—are covered, the numbers finally add up.
This time, however, things didn’t go as planned. Here’s the timeline in a nutshell:
• January: We received the invitation.
• February: We prepared the project and submitted our grant application.
• April: We were supposed to receive the results and either confirm our participation (if successful) or withdraw from the festivals (if not).
• Instead, the decision arrived only on June 11, with this disappointing verdict:
“The expert committee recommends that the project not be funded due to the limited budget allocated to this sub-programme.”
But back in April, we decided to take the risk. All or nothing!
So we’re going. We’ll be performing at two festivals and we’ll also give a free concert for the people of Warsaw. Once again, the Slovak Institute in Warsaw is helping make that concert possible.

Orchester Bratislava Hot Serenaders (BHS), založený v roku 1991 trubkárom Jurajom Bartošom, patrí medzi svetovú špičku v autentickej interpretácii jazzovej hudby 20. a 30. rokov 20. storočia. Teleso tvorí 15 hudobníkov, spevácke trio Serenaders Sisters a spevák Miloš Stančík. Unikátnosť orchestra spočíva v používaní dobových nástrojov, originálnych aranžmánov a historických techník hrania aj spevu.
Bratislava Hot Serenaders (BHS) is an orchestra founded in 1991 by trumpeter Juraj Bartoš. Today, it is recognized as one of the world’s leading ensembles specializing in the authentic performance of jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. The orchestra consists of 15 musicians, the vocal trio Serenaders Sisters, and vocalist Miloš Stančík. What makes BHS unique is its use of period instruments, original arrangements, and historically informed playing and singing techniques.
Na čo získané peniaze použijeme?/What will the funds be used for?

Na dopravné a ubytovacie náklady zájazdu orchestra.
Pre orchester BHS (cca 20 osôb + nástroje) je nevyhnutný veľký autobus. To nám asi tentokrát nevyjde, tak riešime alternatívu veľkými dodávkami, ktoré si budeme šoférovať sami. Nie je to ideálne, ale zúfalé situácie vyžadujú trúfalé riešenia :-) Aj tak to vychádza na nemalé peniaze, cca 1.000 € v júli a 1.000 € v auguste
Prespíme len jednu noc, po koncerte vo Varšave, a po druhom koncerte pojdeme rovno domov. V auguste je to lepšie, tam máme ubytovanie zabezpečené festivalom. Najlacnejší nocľah pre 20 ľiudí vo Varšave sme našli za 800 €, ale ceny idú každým dňom hore. Lebo ide letná sezóna samozrejme :-)
The money raised will help cover the orchestra’s travel and accommodation costs for our tour in Poland.
Travelling with BHS means transporting around 20 people plus all of our instruments, which normally requires a full-size coach. Unfortunately, that’s beyond our budget this time, so we’re looking at the more affordable option of renting large vans and driving them ourselves. It’s far from ideal, but desperate times call for creative solutions. :-)
Even so, transportation alone will cost us approximately €1,000 in July and another €1,000 in August.
To keep costs down, we’ll spend just one night in Warsaw, after our concert there, and head straight back home after the second performance. August is a little easier, as the festival will provide our accommodation.
The cheapest place we’ve found for 20 people in Warsaw costs around €800 for one night—and prices are climbing every day as the summer holiday season approaches. :-)
