My name is Soňa, and at the age of 15, I underwent what should have been a routine spinal surgery. Unfortunately, it resulted in paralysis in my lower body, and I was diagnosed with spastic paraplegia due to an ischemic lesion on the thoracic part of my spinal cord.
My condition has gradually improved with two more surgeries, numerous treatments, and extensive rehabilitation exercises, but my leg mobility has not fully returned.
Thanks to the unwavering support of my closest family, I have persevered through the most challenging times. Currently, I rely on a pair of crutches and can take short walks with the aid of my badass walking stick 😎.
Who is the beneficiary?
I won’t mince words: I am a fighter, determined to lead as normal a life as possible. However, long hours at my computer desk in work made my condition worse, highlighting the need for more physical activity alongside my ongoing rehabilitation— preferably outdoors.
Sadly, my ability to walk is very limited, and a specialised tricycle for the disabled would significantly enhance my mobility. Regrettably, my insurance company does not cover the cost of such a specialised and costly piece of equipment, as it is not a standard, “mass-produced” item.
How will the funds be utilised?
My aspiration is to lead a more active lifestyle, especially because I wish to start a family with my husband and instil a culture of sport and activity in our future children.
The funds raised will be used to buy a tricycle for the disabled, enabling me to explore places I would otherwise be unable to reach on foot. After extensive research, I have managed to find a bike that perfectly suits my needs and can be fit in my flat and car, allowing me to go on longer and more engaging rambles with my family.
Even if I fall short of the target amount, I won’t give up and will keep looking for new ways to get the bicycle.
Should we surpass the initial fundraising goal, any surplus funds will contribute towards my rehabilitation and spa treatments.
