Tentokrát to začalo miernymi bolesťami krížov, čo si s tým lámať hlavu, veď do týždňa to bude zase pohoda.
25. júna ma hospitalizovali, podľa posledných správ by ma mali 14. 9. prepustiť do domácej liečby.
Cancer sidelined Rastislav from his normal life
My life used to be active – always on the go, creating something or learning something new. Movement was essential to me, both in my professional and personal life; I could never have imagined a situation where I wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning to go to work or pursue my other activities.
However, one morning in 2020, I was met with an unpleasant surprise.
Pain, limited mobility, bleeding… As luck would have it, I was home alone, so I had no choice but to call emergency services. They arrived at what felt like supersonic speed – I was in such pain that I hadn't even managed to crawl on all fours to the hallway to unlock the front door and gate. A burly paramedic ended up carrying me out. To cut this unpleasant memory short: after undergoing tests at the emergency department, the verdict came in – a kidney tumor that had ruptured and was bleeding into the kidney. The recommendation was clear: immediate hospitalization and surgery.
But things didn't go smoothly; the infamous pandemic had shut hospital doors, and my diagnosis didn't work like a magic „Open Sesame.“ A crisis committee convened, deliberated for two days, and decided to admit me after three negative tests.
Thanks to the excellent team of urologists and surgeons at St. Michael's Hospital in Bratislava, the surgery was a success; although I had to sacrifice a kidney as the price, fortunately, the entire tumor was removed. It turned out to be malignant, though – fortunately – it hadn't yet metastasized. It was time for a joyful dance of life and the blissful realization that I would celebrate my 50th birthday the following year in good health, having defeated my opponent: cancer.
It is now June 2026.
This time, it started with mild lower back pain; I didn't give it much thought, assuming I’d be fine again within a week. But the pain persisted, so I saw specialists, and a battery of tests revealed an unpleasant reality. I had underestimated the insidious adversary from my previous battle; it likes to attack from behind, striking when you least expect it. It had spent six years lying in wait, consolidating its position and preparing for another long war of attrition. It had carefully concealed its secondary form – tumor deposits in the bones known as osteolytic metastases, characterized by the dominance of bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts). This process causes the bone to „dissolve,“ leading to weakness and a heightened risk of pathological fractures. It chose a few vertebrae, my hip joint, my pelvis, and my sternum as its base of operations. It quietly eroded my L4 and L5 vertebrae to the point where my own body weight caused a compression fracture, resulting in excruciating lower back pain.
Within a month, my condition deteriorated to the point where I had to be hospitalized and undergo surgery to remove part of the damaged vertebra before the pressure on my spinal cord could cause paralysis. I told myself, „Great – the pain has subsided; we’re winning…“ But the rude awakening came very quickly. I’m at an impasse: the remnants of the L4 and L5 vertebrae need to be removed and replaced, but unfortunately, there is no way to anchor them because the surrounding area has already been occupied by the enemy – metastases. The surgeons won't stabilize the spine because of the metastases, while the oncologist won't start treating the metastases because the spine isn't stabilized, leaving me immobile and unstable.
So here I lie, waiting for a miracle.
The miracle happened: after my attending physicians made repeated urgent requests, the neurosurgery department at Ružinov University Hospital agreed to the procedure. I was transferred and operated on that very same evening; they stabilized my vertebrae from the pelvis up to L7. According to the neurosurgeons' prognosis, I won't be able to sit up anytime soon due to the excessive pressure on the severely damaged L4 and L5 vertebrae.
Three days after the surgery, I was transferred to the National Cancer Institute, where I received oncological treatment, including radiotherapy and immunotherapy. I was hospitalized on June 25th, and according to the latest updates, I am scheduled to be discharged for home-based care on September 14th.
What exactly will the funds from this campaign be used for?
Once I return home, I absolutely must get back to my ongoing and new projects – and, if my condition allows, even resume working (at least remotely). To do this, I need to move my workspace to my bed. It sounds simple enough, but I wasn't prepared for this scenario at all; I simply cannot get my current computer setup into bed.
I need to either buy a special mounting system to position the entire setup over the bed or acquire new mobile devices suitable for remote work while lying down.
Funds from this campaign would be used to purchase the LEVUS ULTIMATE – a workstation that aligns the body into a neutral ergonomic position, eliminating spinal compression through true zero-gravity positioning. By reclining the torso and elevating the legs, body weight is evenly distributed across the mattress surface rather than concentrating on the lower back. This posture relieves the spine and opens the hip angle, promoting optimal blood circulation. The result is a sensation of weightlessness that eliminates distractions caused by physical discomfort, enabling deep, uninterrupted focus.
Unfortunately, my current income from the Social Insurance Agency does not allow me to meet my needs. Given that this excellent device costs €4,000 – an amount currently beyond my reach – I am turning to the power of solidarity and help.
